TOP TOOLS
TOP 10 TOOLS 2008
Marcel de Leeuwe

Marcel works for a publisher of multimedia primary education @ Noordhoff Uitgevers ('Uitgevers' means Publishers), based in Houten, The Netherlands. He has a passion for learning, writes a personal blog in Dutch about learning: www.leerbeleving.nl and is editor of the Dutch portal www.e-learning.nl.

Marcel's Top 10 Tools as at 7 September 2008

  1. WordPress
Makes publishing easy and convenient. Offers me the opportunity to focus on the content of blog post instead of technology. Clean interface and lots of possibilities to tune the environment the way you want.

  2. Google Reader
I tried a lot of RSS-readers but this one is my favourite. easy to maintain your subscriptions, great sharing options and fast. This is the tool I used most frequently.

  3. Moodle
Every time I use the environment with learners I experience the quality and the many options of this learning environment. I like the didactical ideas behind the environment and if it matching your own model it will be a winner! Powerful learning experiences are within the reach of every creative learning designer and learner.

  4. MindMeister
Mindmapping is a very powerful methodology for structuring your own ideas but also within workshops it can be a strong tool for both learners and trainers. MindMeister is a basic online tool. It stands out because of the clean and crispy interface, the excellent sharing options (share it really the way you want) and the user centric and personal service. MindMeister helps me to keep all the information in my head organized.

  5. Twitter
Although it seems to be a playfull tool with also a lot of irrelevant messages it is a nice way to stay in touch with other professionals and to get fast responses to your learning questions. I also get a lot of new insights from other people messages (with news, interesting sites, new developments etc.).

  6. FireFox
Fast and stable browser with all the add-ons to create a powerful learning environment and to experience the web to it's full extend.

  7. eXe
Very basic application to create webbased training modules. SCORM-compliant with enough pre-defined didactical interactions. Not a very professional application yet but a nice tool for organizations to explore the possibilities of e-Learning.

  8. Delicious
Good way to keep up with all the websites and to manage them. Not spectacular and I rarely use the community options but convenient.

  9. iTunes
I'm addicted to podcasts and vodcasts and iTunes is a easy way to get access to them. Fast enough and a nice way of presenting the library. You can find so many educational podcast that only the timefactor is holding you back from learning all day long.

  10. Piclens
Add-on to FireFox and Internet Explorer. Offers me a fast way to explore images and videos from e.g. Flickr and YouTube. I often use these for learning materials and PicLens helps me with accessing these sites more intuitive, it gives me the energy to carry on because you can browse the collections more efficient.
