TOP 10 TOOLS 2009
Greg Parmer

Network Engineer for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the College of Agriculture at Auburn University, AL.

My day to day duties include installation and maintenance of servers, with user support of network (file storage, web storage, permissions, security, and general IT usage that can support Extension and Faculty educators and their support staff.  My personal blog/website is at networkredneck.blogspot.com. It hasn't gotten much love from me lately though.

Greg's Top 10 Tools as at 20 October 2009

  1. Google  -- self-explanatory, no? That's where we find everything we need.

  2. Wikipedia -- doubters should recognize it as an intelligently interwoven list of references, if nothing else.

  3. Sharepoint -- Like Google, but security trimmed. Search all of the data you have access to...even confidential data.

  4. PowerPoint -- It's the standard for presentations, still.

  5. YouTube -- There's nothing like actually seeing something in action. It's like a thousand pictures times a thousand words.

  6. Twitter -- Realtime learning/sharing. It is the most up to date reference available. I'm a "Bitter" fan too, but that's still a Twitter tool.

  7. Diigo -- It does everything Delicious does for me, plus so much more. I have a Delicious account too, which Diigo automatically updates. Furthermore, it allowed me to import all of my bookmarks so I didn't have some bookmarks on a PC and some online. They are still all in one place. Delicious lovers never know I've abandoned them either.

  8. Windows Live Photo Gallery -- Organization of photos is very easy.  Photos *need* tagging. Sort by tag, date, name, folder, and other options. Allows one button publishing to Flickr also.

  9. Flickr -- Need a photo to illustrate a point? Here's a way to find free, high quality photos.

  10. iGoogle -- Gadgets/apps for all sorts of personal, administrative, and social chores. I don't have to log into gmail OR Facebook to get current info.
