David's Top 10 Tools as at 2 March 2008

  1. Voicethread - Without a doubt, as significant a development as the pencil was to learning! I really mean that. Simply upload photos and then watch as others speak and write about the photos. Stories, maps, personal albums, advice columns, everything is possible. Be sure to check out Dr. Quinn's Love line - so cute. A special educator discount only costs $10!!!

  2. Ning -- Ning, a social networking site offers teachers K-12 free and secure (no ads!) social networking for their classrooms. Much more user friendly and yet high tech than other networking sites, it can be used by students to share and make a learning community. Great discussion features, embedding, videos, flexible and personal design. This is the future of learning! FREE

  3. Buzka -- Buzka takes bookmarking and sharing of sites to a higher and more "pictorial" level. Share your sites in one Buzka and make spots for each category of sites. Those looking at the sites will see both the web page and a description. Really encourages others to investigate and much better than looking at a dry url.FREE

  4. Chinswing -- I wonder why this hasn't taken off! Simply put a question out there and others will reply in voice. Great way to have a real voice conversation on any topic. Movies, classes, your school, teaching, philosophy, any topic.

  5. Youtube -- yeah, unfortunately it is something the students know and thus, usable for motivation, learning. Improved channels and playlist presentations make it a better choice now for teachers than previously. It also holds less stringent copyright enforcement which allows educators more breadth of use. FREE

  6. Camtasia -- This does everything in terms of presenting video, making screencasts and converting audio/video. A top knotch product for anyone using video and presenting information. Get your hands on it today!

  7. Karafun Karaoke -- Very little known, karaoke is an incredibly powerful literacy tool. With just a photo, script and audio , anyone can easily make a karaoke file! Students will be amazed to hear their voice and see the words fly across the screen! I've made several screencasts on how to make them and many innovative teachers are using karaoke to teach reading across the U.S. and Canada. FREE.

  8. Google. -- All things google and I really think they "get it", the future that IS. It isn't about content but ease of sharing, sending, moving, and accessing information among groups and communities. Whether calendars, email, documents, presentations, they GET IT. FREE!

  9. Quibblo -- make quizzes, surveys quickly! I've tried others but this application simply and clearly works. Very easy to enter info. and get your questions, tests up and going. Lots of feedback for those taking the polls, tests, quizzes, surveys. FREE

  10. Esnips.  - Get 5 gbs of FREE storage. Allows the user different privacy settings. Present your videos and flash/ppts for previewing. Write about your files and share. A great way for a person to store their files and share them. FREE
