Andrea's Top 10 Tools as at 6 March 2008
(in the order of their importance for my work and intensity of use)

  1. Lotus Mail - I still love the possibility to work offline sometimes (although this limits types of task that can be done). I use Google-Mail for private purposes, but I do not like the idea that all data is observed and used by google. Therefore I would prefer to not use Google-Mail for work as I do not feel in "control" what they do with this data now and in the future.

  2. Firefox Browser  - It just works fine. Some time ago IE caused problems so I had to restart the computer. Then i switched and see no need to go back again.

  3. Google Reader  - Allows me to browse fast through the feeds, search them, mark those I want to get back to.

  4. Skype  -  Makes people far away feel close. And I love to use the mood-message-line for Twitter-like microblogging

  5. Wordpress  -  A new form of publishing, it makes me think about core insights of my work I want to share; and people interested in impact don't have to read the full journal paper

  6. Powerpoint - Even though I reduce the amount of slides and text, I still find it very useful to illustrate my ideas and capture them for later use and sharing

  7. flickr - It is the resource for clipart, when I create slides. A wonderful resource with many Creative-Commons attributed licences, so you do not infringe copyrights

  8. Moviemaker  - simple enough for a user like me to produce my short educational movies myself if I like. And the output looks good enough for webpage use

  9. Youtube - A source for educational videos that I check and use more and more for my lectures and other presentations

  10. PaintNet -  An open Source tool simple, and good enough for my needs to edit fotos, especially to add text.
