About  iTouch Learning

Both the iPod Touch and the iPhone use the same multi-touch interface (shown in the picture to the left); you control everything with your fingers.

They both have the traditional iPod functionality to listen to audio (music/podcasts/audiobooks/MP3 files) but also to watch videos (MPEG-4 files) and view photos

But they are more than just an iPod as they now also have on-board Internet applications which include:

  • Safari web browser - to search the web using the touchscreen QWERTY keyboard

  • Mail reader - to read HTML videos and Word, Excel and PDF attachments

  • YouTube player - to locate and view YouTube videos

  • Maps reader - to get directions and check traffic with Google Maps

And there are many other 3rd party web apps available too ...

  • You can connect to the Internet anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection, and additionally, of course, the iPhone has mobile phone capabilities as well as a camera.

  • The accelerometer detects when you rotate the iPod Touch from portrait to landscape and automatically changes the contents of the display.

  • You can synchronise not only your music from iTunes but also your mail accounts, contacts, bookmarks and so on.

The iPhone got most of the press attention, but the iPod Touch is a great little device that adds so much more to the iPod that it (together with the iPhone) is now a perfect m-learning device.

10 Reasons why the iPhone & iPod Touch are ideal for m-learning

  1. Size of the screen

  2. Quality of the video

  3. Touch technology to control it with your fingers rather than a stylus you can lose

  4. Always-on functionality of the iPhone and wi-fi connectedness of iPod Touch

  5. Safari web browser provides access to great range of web apps

  6. Imminent arrival of 3rd party apps will open up mlearning possibilities even further

  7. Valuable device for listening to instructional and informational podcasts

  8. Ideal for the delivery of short bites of JIT content

  9. Well designed; good to look at and great to hold

  10. Affordable devices: 3G iPhone costs will be subsidised
