How the old, the young and everyone in between uses social networks

A recent posting in eMarketer reviews a report by Anderson Analytics on the use of social networks and compares the different networks the generations use in this great little chart:

 

It also considers why social networkers joined a social network and interestingly points out that "very few
users of any age joined for business-related purposes such as
recruiting potential candidates, sales, job searches or business
networking" 
and summarises
"It seems social networking sites are places for friends to meet, no matter what their age".â?¦

Social Networking on Intranets

Jakob Nielsen's recent posting on Alertbox, which summarises his company's report on social networking, has been picked up in a number of places:

ReadWrite Enterprise headline their posting with "Enterprise 2.0: awareness is easier than execution" and point out that "Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen asserts that despite broad awareness,
real execution of Web 2.0 in the enterprise is still rare at this point."

togetherlean blog focuses on Nielsen's findings: "Perhaps more than any other corporate intranet innovation, social software technologies are exposing the holes in corporate communication
and collaboration — and at times filling them before the (usually
slow-moving) enterprise can fully grasp (and control) the flow."

The part that struck a chord with me was the section, subtitled:  It's Not Just About Tools, But Tools Do Matter
