Course and learning management systems

Comment from those who selected Moodle as one of their Top 10 Tools in 2009

  • This was my introduction to Open Source software, when we used it to create CABWEB . This is a truly great example of an open source community with lots of active and helpful users (very few of whom are programmers). I am honoured to be moderator of Social forum at Moodle.org Frances Bell

  • Only recently started getting material up on this but can already see potential. Great for being able to mark work all in one place!  Leia Fee

  • it’s a great LMS, plus it’s free. Henrique Rabello

  • I teach my own online courses using this. Very stable and easy to use. Carol Cooper Taylor

  • Moodle is the CMS in our Institute, but I also use it to organise groups and provide support. Brian Mulligan

  • Who ever thought I’d own my own virtual learning environment? Moodle is much better than Blackboard, which is amazing considering the time and money the latter have had to come up with something better. The software continues to improve, although it’s already got everything I can think of  Clive Shepherd

  • Moodle is my best tool for e-learning. I have tried several CMS / LMS systems in previous 6 years, but only Moodle fully meets my needs. It is free, friendly to use and very flexible. I have transferred all my educational courses into Moodle. Visit our Moodle site – moodle.vsb.cz. Vaclav Friedrich

  • An institution in institutions! Martin Dougimas's erstwhile thesis project continues to meet the learning management requirements of any number and type of organization. Social Constructivist? Virtual Learning Environment? Easy-to-use? Great Platform.  Michael Hanley

Comment from those who selected Moodle as one of their Top 10 Tools in 2008

  • "Moodle has to be my learning environment of choice. None of them are perfect, but Moodle is by far the simplest to use and is designed by people who understand pedagogy not just technology. It is open source and customisable, to the extent it can look like a slick company intranet as easily as a VLE for hundreds of thousands of students." Helen Whitehead

  • "Every time I use the environment with learners I experience the quality and the many options of this learning environment. I like the didactical ideas behind the environment and if it matching your own model it will be a winner! Powerful learning experiences are within the reach of every creative learning designer and learner." Marcel de Leeuwe

  • "the most popular, the most customizable, the most community driven VLE in existence"  Mary Cooch

  • "we offer Moodle to all of our schools and I'm constantly amazed and surprised at what it can do."  Ian Usher

  • "open source (meaning free, written by programmers for the greater good) learning management system (track your eLearning/quizzes/forums/assignments). Since you probably don’t have a Dad with his own web host, you’ll need a good Moodle host. Check out www.moodlerooms.com as an option."  Bonni Stachowiak

  • "This open source course management system is my bread and butter and has led me into the free software world. Its community of teachers and its enlightened leadership is second to none." Hans de Zwart

  • "Moodle is the CMS in our Institute, but I also use it to organise groups and provide support." Brian Mulligan

  • "Moodle is a course management system - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create and deliver effective on-line learning communities" Andreas Büsing

  • "Who ever thought I’d own my own virtual learning environment? Moodle is much better than Blackboard, which is amazing considering the time and money the latter have had to come up with something better. The software continues to improve, although it’s already got everything I can think of."  Clive Shepherd

  • "I've been working with Moodle for four years - since version 1 came out. Although designed to work within a formal education setting, its beauty is in its flexibility. Every organisation, and every person, will use Moodle in a different way. It's would be a particularly mature learning organisation which uses every function of Moodle. Now that we've cracked the way the Moodle theme packs work, we're finding more and more applications for it - particularly in public sector organisations. There are two things that Moodle does not do well. One is handling bookings for face-to-face events, so some sort of Learner records system is an essential component of a complete solution. The other is handling content for use outside of a formal "course"-based delivery."  Mark Berthelemy

  • "Moodle just gets better and better.  Never had installing your own LMS been easier.  It is so easy to use, has masses of functionality and is very robust. Simply the best virtual learning environment and no licence fees! No wonder over 24% of small and medium sized US corporates use Moodle"  Steve Rayson

  • "Ideal for structured communications and a central platform for a community e.g My.edu.au"  Anne Paterson

  • "Moodle is a feature rich course management system (CMS) and an excellent tool for setting up a virtual learning environment (VLE). Good for uploading student work and for providing grades and feedback. Easy to add all sorts of resources. Also includes useful blog and wiki features."  Patricia Donaghy

  • "One of the best overall platforms for asynchronous e-learning. Free, open-source with great add-ons developed in a global community. Backbone of most of my e-learning projects." Stylianos Mystakidis

  • "I was amazed with the features of the moodle for E-Learning. I feel it can solve total requirements of an online Institute.  Course management, user management, quiz managements etc., are really very nicely designed."  N B Venkateswarlu

  • "An Awesome course management system! The more you use it, the more you love it. Who said that open source is of no quality? It is simply an excellent tool to facilitate online learning (wikis, blogs, forums, chat, Instant Messaging, quizzes, polls, journals, database, e-books, basic content management, WYSIWYG editor, Item analysis, etc)."  Zaid Algasoff

  • "Moodle is the most comprehensive open source e-Learning system out there.  It can be complicated to use at first, but once you understand its intricacies you can really appreciate its power."  Mark Schumann

  • "Our college uses this LMS. It's great in that most lecturers use it to upload course materials and resources (such as podcasts, pdfs, screencasts, diagrams, slideshows, links, etc). The forums are particularly useful for asking questions about assignments, etc, and for general 'brain picking' of our lecturers! Moodle has good assignment management features also - including assignment description, notification of due dates and submission forms."  Karen OBrien

  • "Powerful, easy to set up, free, and engaging for students and teachers. It is my favorite LMS by far, and I have used many."  Jason Edwards

  • "Robust open source course management system which is easy to use, easy to set up both users and courses and does not require specialist/expensive hosting/implementation. We use Moodle to 'house' many of our courses for clients."  Seaghan Moriarty

  • "The best VLE/LMS/CMS (!) I've worked with, so versatile." David Smailes

  • "I started using Moodle this last year with a few of my computer classes but will use this open-source course management system with all my classes this year.  It’s easy to use, has built in blogging and modules (quizzes, journals, docs) that make it easy to keep all class documents in one area." Colette Cassinelli

  • "t really surprises me how this course management system offers a plenty of course management features for free. I always recommend Moodle if someone asks me for the cheapest yet the best CMS or LMS for online learning."  Sathish Narayanan

  • "I use this Open Source course management system for my training courses.  I like its interactive components, including chats, forums, wikis, workshops.  I am also looking into ways to use it for group coaching." Anastasia Prynikova

  • "Already an institution in institutions! Martin Dougimas's erstwhile thesis project continues to meet the learning management requirements of any number and type of organisation. I just love the idea of framing Social Constructivism in such an useful environment." Michael Hanley
